Who We Are

The Society of Honorary Police Surgeons of the City of New York is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteer doctors appointed for their expertise in their respective fields and has served New York's Finest for many years.

While there are full-time police surgeons staffed by the NYPD, there are many more police surgeons who serve a vital role in treating cops and their most vulnerable time of need, when they are injured in line of duty.

The selfless humanitarian effort volunteerism goes beyond the Line of Duty injuries to day-to-day support and private practice. The Society also hosts an annual gala that supports the New York City Police Foundation, and funding for a special scholarship that awards dependent children of active and inactive uniformed members of the NYPD, who have been admitted or are attending graduate schools and medical, dental, and related fields.

What We Do

Our Society has three functions:

Service to the Department

Our members individually provide free medical care to members of the Department and their families referred to us by the Medical Division. Care provided ranges from office consultations to life-saving surgery.

Philanthropy

Each year we give scholarships to the children of police officers (active and retired) who are entering graduate school in the health professions.

Fraternal

With the help of the Chief Surgeon's staff, our Society organizes and runs the annual Police Surgeons' Dinner, a wonderful event that brings together high-ranking police officials, police surgeons and honorary surgeons.

Our Annual Gala

The annual Police Surgeon’s Dinner is a gala event that affords the NYPD Police Surgeons and Honorary Police Surgeons an opportunity to gather and meet with members of the Department and the medical community.

This year’s event will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Terrace on the Park in Corona, Queens.

We will once again be presenting scholarship awards in the memories of former NYPD Chief Surgeons, Dr. Robert E. Thomas and Dr. Clarence G. Robinson.

Tickets are available now.

Scholarships

The Society of Honorary Police Surgeons of the City of New York Scholarship Fund provides monetary awards for dependent children or spouses of active and retired uniformed members of the NYPD who are currently attending or have been accepted to Graduate Schools within the health care professions (e.g. medical, dental, nursing, physician assistants, clinical psychology, etc.).

We fund these scholarships in honor of former New York City Police Department Supervising Chief Surgeons, Dr. Clarence G. Robinson and Dr. Robert E. Thomas. Multiple scholarships are awarded with varying amounts for qualified applicants.

This award is NOT administered by the Department. However, the application period is announced annually via Department Bulletin.
